K9 Handler, Deputy Brandon Barrett, and K9, Sarge, assisted Clay County, NC
Sheriff's Office in the apprehension of escapee, John Douglas Graham.  Sarge tracked
the escapee to a vacant home that had been previously searched.  It was later
discovered that the assailant had been hiding in the attic of the home, which Sarge had
tracked to.  The Towns County Sheriff's Office is proud of Sarge and his handler,
Deputy Brandon Barrett.

On Saturday, August 3, deputies with the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by
an agent with the Appalachian Drug Task Force, made two arrests after alleged
illegal drugs were found in a residence on Bell Street.

An amount of marijuana was seized at the residence, and two suspects were taken
into custody.  Travis Wayne Pugh, 38, of a Hayesville, NC address,  and Kenneth
Wade Shiver, 50, of Hiawassee, were both charged with one count each of Possession
of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, and Possession of Marijuana less than an
ounce. The case is still under investigation, and the two are still in custody in the
Towns County Detention Center at press time.
visited the campus of Towns County Schools, at the request of School On
August 16, Towns County Sheriff’s Cpl. Brandon Barrett and K9 “Sarge”
Resource Officer Deputy Donnie Jarrard.

Cpl. Barrett and Sarge walked the parking lots and conducted “free air sniffs”
among the vehicles. No contraband objects were detected by the K9.

After conducting a walk-through of the parking lots, Cpl. Barrett was invited
into the school with a new member of Towns County’s K9 team, “Copper”.
Copper is a bloodhound puppy, and was donated to Towns County Sheriff’s
Office from Sporting Chance Kennels in Savannah, Ga. He will be trained and
used for tracking duties both in trailing suspects and in searching for missing
persons.

For now, Copper is just a pup who enjoyed the attention of the students at the
school, and Cpl. Barrett is looking forward to working with him.

A sexual abuse incident was reported to the Towns
County Sheriff’s Office in March of this year. The
incident allegedly occurred in October 2012 at a residence
in Towns County.

Sheriff’s Investigators who were following up with the
investigation recently located the suspect in Warren
County, Ohio.

Towns County Investigators secured an arrest warrant
for Paul Jason Brothers, 34, of Waynesville, Ohio.
Warren County, Ohio Sheriff’s officials picked up the
suspect. Brothers waived extradition, and Towns County
deputies transported him back to Towns County on
August 10.

Brothers has been charged with (1) count of Rape. He is
being held in Towns County Detention Center at press
time.
On August 3, 2013, a Financial Transaction Card
Fraud case was reported to Towns County Sheriff’s
Office.

The incident involved the use of an alleged stolen
credit card which a suspect had used and attempted to
use in Towns County and in Warne, Marble and
Robbinsville, North Carolina.

Investigators with Towns County Sheriff’s Office were
able to identify a suspect from video footage obtained
from one of the convenience stores.

Shylan Allen Luther, 31, of Hayesville, North Carolina
was charged with Financial Transaction Card Fraud.
The investigation is continuing and additional arrests
may be forthcoming.

Cpl. Brandon Barrett will be at the 2nd Annual Pet
Celebration on the Historic Hayesville Square on
Saturday, September 14, 2013 all day long with K9s
Sarge and Copper.  Cpl. Barrett will be making a
presentations between 1:00 and 2:30.  Come out and
meet our new tracking dog, Copper.
